Beach Day

Yesterday, November 12th, my class, Dht went on a school trip to Otaki beach. We left school at about 9:30 off to the beach. Nicky was my groups van driver. When we got to the beach there was life guards waiting at the surf club for us. Their names were Sophrose, Cassie, Lisa and Damien. They took us on a tour around the surf club. After that we went up stairs and they talk a little bit about what they do and stuff like that.

After they gave us a tour we learnt about the dangers in the water and how we can see them from shore. They taught us about rips which is a very strong current. They can pull people out just behind the waves. The way you can see a rip is if the waves are criss crossing into each other, calm water in spots, foamy water floating out to sea in a line and debris which mean rubbish or stuff in a different language. After we went and did a 30 minute rubbish pick up along the beach. we got a lot of rubbish.

Then we had morning tea and we sat outside and ate and talked. After that we learnt about CPR and we did it on fake people. Then we played some games. The first game we did was a eating challenge which was weetbix one. It was the first 3 people to eat a dry weetbix. Then we split into two teams and we had a race you could make the highest pyramid tower. Then we did the chubby bunny challenge which was very gross because I hate marshmallows. I could only fit 6 marshmallows in my mouth.

Then we had lunch. during our lunch time we had to get changed to go swimming after lunch. After lunch we played beach flags. I was in the top 10. The top three people were Lycan, Phoenix and Harrison. Aftert that game we went the equipment shed and got boogey boards. I caught like 5 waves into shore. It was really fun. After swimming for a long time we all went and had showers and got changed.

They then took us out on the deck and asked us questions about what we learnt. I got two answers right so I got two chocolates. I had a really good day at the beach.

ROAR

Why do we have ROAR and why is it important?
I think we have it to remind ourselves to follow them, and so we can follow the ROAR everyday. I think it important because without them there would be nothing for us to follow and there would be no expectations of what we need to try and achieve.

ROAR:
Respect - look at the teacher and listen.

OC pride - Wear the correct uniform at all times.

Active learner - Finish tasks that have been set for you on time.

Responsibility - Get to classes on time after breaks and in the morning.

My Labour Weekend

During the weekend on Sunday 27th October. My uncle, Kara took me and my sisters out to river stone cafe. When we got there I got macaroni and cheese. It was so yum. After that he dropped us off at my dads house. When we got back home my dad was outside building his tiny home.

Later that day I got a text from my best friend, Kyana. She asked if me and my sister, Nova wanted to go for a walk with her to Crystals Bend. We immediately said yes. Her and her mum, Mel later came a picked us up. We got Kyana's baby nephew Ruben and went on the walk. When we started walking the track was really bumpy.

So we had to turn around because the pram was shaking and didn't look comfortable for Ruben. After we got back to the car Mel decided to take us to Kyana's grandparents. After spending half an hour there we dropped Ruben off at his house. Then Mel dropped me, Nova and Kyana off at my dads. Kyana stayed the night at our house with us.

The next day we woke up had showers and got dressed. We then all hopped in the car and drove to Porirua. After we got to a mall there we looked in some shops and went up tot he food court. Me, Nova and Kyana all got some sushi. My Little sister, Darby got a wrap, and my dad had a coffee. After we finished eating we went and looked at heaps of shops, like Kmart, Footlocker, Stirling sports and Lovisa.

We didn't buy anything though because there wasn't anything we liked.  After we left the mall we drove back home. Before we came home we went to Koru Ice and got a ice-cream. Then we dropped Kyana off and my dad dropped us back at my mums house.

I had a great labour weekend.

My Holidays

On Saturday 29 September I went to a cafe/garden area in Kaitoke near Upper hutt . I went there
with my mum, sisters, Kyana ( my best friend), aunty, cousins, and my nana. We went there to
take photos for my cousins baby. They had heaps of cherry blossom trees along all the paths
and they had really cool water features. We walked around and took photos of Navarah for like a
hour and a half.

Later that day we went to denny's for dinner I got wedges. After that we went to
Kmart for fun and just looked around and played with the stuff they had there. After that we went
home and we went to my nana and granddads to give my granddad his birthday present.
When my mum, sisters and Kyana went home I stayed the night at my nanas.

The next day I walked to my cousin, Sharnahs house and got her baby and took him to my nanas. When my other cousin came home from her work I just sat and played video games with her while my nana looked after Navarah.

My Weekend

WALT: use the simple sentence in our writing.

Friday 30th August Kyana and I went to centre skate. Centre Skate is a place where you can hire roller skates/blades. We got there at 6pm and it ended at 9pm. When it ended my dad picked me and her up and we got dropped off at Kyana's house.

When we got to Kyana's house we just played on our phones, then we went to sleep. The next morning we woke up and went out side and layed in the sun. It was really hot on Saturday.  We were so bored for ages.

Kyana's mum, Mel brought us subway for lunch. After Mel left to go somewhere  me and Kyana went to town to get a ice block. When we got back we found some rocks and we painted them. It took 2 hours. For dinner we had toasties. Soon after my dad came and picked me up from Kyana's house.

Maths Reflection

This week we only did maths twice. The first day we did it I did a maths sheet.  It was about graphs. I had to work the problem out by using a graph. I learnt how to use all types of graphs.

Today we did group problem solving. I know we need to read the problem and look for the key words and this tells us what operation we need to use. Something I need to work on is reading the problem properly. Strategies I used was addition.

Maths Reflection

This term for maths we have been doing problem solving. We have groups that we go into every time we do maths. In my group there is Me, Michelle, Ben and Kanita.

One of the most recent problem's we have done was:

There are 13 more boys than girls in the soccer club. The total membership is 65.
How many boys are in the club?

This how we worked it out:
65 - 13 = 52
52 ÷ 2 = 26
26 +13 = 39

Answer: 39 boys

I found this one easy. Me and my group worked very well together.
We went up and showed the class how we worked it out. We have rolls for each person.

Kanita was the reader so she red out the problem, I was the presenter so I told the class how we worked it out. Michelle was the writer  she wrote how we worked it out and Ben was the questioner he asked if there were any question's and he answered them.

With problem solving I have learnt how to find the rule and to read the problem carefully before working it out.

Holidays

On the first day of the holidays I went to kyanas for 4 days we made a huge fort in her lounge. That was where we slept. While I was there we went uptown And skating and we played mine-craft. Later that week I went to my cousins, Sharnahs to hangout with her and her baby, Navarah. That night we all went to our nanas house and stayed the night so my nana could look after Navarah while we went to the dentist.

The next week I had swimming training on Tuesday and Thursday for a competition I had coming up in the weekend. On the Friday of that week I went with Sharnah, my nana, my sister and Navarah to Paraparaumu pools. It was Navarahs first time! It was so much fun.

The next day, I had to wake up early so me and my mum could go to my competition. When we got there I had to warm up for my heats. My first heat was 50m fly which I came 1st in and  my next one was 50m fr which I came 1st in. The next day I had 50m back which I came 2nd in and then I had 100m fr which I came second in.

Matariki

I Knew that Matariki was the beginning of the Maori new year. Matariki is a cluster of 9 bright shining stars, named Waiti, Waita, waipuna-rangi, Tupu-a-nuku, Tupu-a-rangi, ururangi, Pahutakawa and Hiwaiterangi.

Matariki rises in the north east. It appears in the sky from june 25th - june 28th. It isn't the same date every year it changes. If you look up in the sky with a telescope you can see hundreds of stars but if you look up with the naked eye you can only see a bright shining cluster of about 7-9 stars.

Matariki is a special time to remember those who have passed on.In the olden days, when our tupuna looked up in the sky and saw that Matariki wasn't there they started harvesting and preserving food and crops for the winter and their whanau.

I think Matariki is very special cause it reminds me of my ancestors. Everybodys gets together and sing songs.

Flying our Rockets

On May 30th, me and my class flew our bottle rockets. Which was just a bottle no fins no nose cone just the bottle itself. This was just to test out how far it went and what modifications we could do!

We used 55 psi and 200ml of water.  The weather was good but its just the wind. The wind was going south. So our rocket turned and it slowed down. I think the weight of the water probably weighed the rocket down causing it to not go far. Our rocket went very high but I think it could go higher and further. Next time we do it I think we have to put less water!

Teachers striking day!

Why did I have a day off on strike day? The reasoning the teachers went on strike is because the teachers all over NZ were getting to much work to do! And they had to work after hours like at home or in the weekend.

For the hours that they worked they did not get payed extra for working at home. They went striking to get us a better education. So they could have less workloads and they can focus more on things in class and let us learn more!

Definitely agree on the reason why they went on strike. I also think that it is good for them to go on strike not only cause we get a day off but because they are trying to get less work, so they can actually have time in the classroom to help all the students who need help.

Revolution tour

I wasn't at the show yesterday but I heard things about it! They did a lot of things like singing, dancing ,jokes and reading stories.

The main person was named Ben, I heard he was really funny.  He told lots of jokes and  stories. his quote was "we make a living by what we get! we make a life by what we give" ( Winston.S. Churchill). I think it means like do what you want to be done to you. For example if your nice to people they might do it back but don't expect anything in return.

My school holiday

These holidays I had a lot of fun with my friends and cousin. The first week of holidays I went to the pools with some of my friends and cousin the whole week. We also put up a tent and stayed in it over night (it was freezing!!!).

For Easter I went to crystals bend for a walk with my aunty and uncle and my cousins. Me, my uncle and cousin jumped into the freezing cold water!!! but after I got five buks so it was algoods. Then we got home and  had a Easter egg hunt with my cousins, Wikitoria and Raukawa. We took like half an hour to find them.

On the first weekend of holidays my mum took me, my sisters and Kyana Masterton for the day.We went shopping and had lunch. After that we went to this hot air balloon show at  night. My cousins met  up with us there.

On the second week of holidays I hung out with Kyana and stayed at her house and she stayed at my house. So we just rotated houses basically! Then on Friday I went up to see my baby cousin, Navarah and my nan and other cousins.

Science Fair Roadshow

Last week the science roadshow came to Otaki College. They talked about a lot of different things about science. And things to do with gravity.

There was a lot of experiments that they brought. My favourite one was the bed of nails. Basically there was a whole bunch of nails in a wooden board. You could lay down on it and it wouldn't  hurt. I didn't try it but my friends did!

There was another one I liked which was a thing that you could whisper in and the other one on the other side could hear everything you said even though they were far away from each other. They looked like big blue satellites. It was really cool I liked looking at all the experiments.

Maoriland Film Festival

Friday march 22nd, my school went tot the Maoriland Film Festival at Nga Pura Pura. We walked down to Nga Pura Pura just after school started. When we got there we watched 8 films. My two favourites were Fast Horse and Spirit, although spirit made me cry cause it was scary it was good.  It was about a man and a woman in there house late at night about to  watch a movie and all of a sudden a man dressed like a nun pops up from outside the window. Fast Horse  is about a Indian man doing a horse relay and he comes last but he tried and trained for ages!

I really enjoyed watching the films !!

Yesterday my class and other year 7/8 classes went to Wellington early in the morning. We went and saw 3 shows, Trolls, Wolf gangs magical musical circus and Gabez (mime). I'm gonna write about the wolf gang show.

The wolf gang show was at the opera house Wellington. This show was the second one that we watched. It was my favourite.

There were three main characters but they had no name. There was a women and two men. one of the men just played an instrument and the other man and women did all kind of tricks and stunts.

It was really cool my group got to sit in the top chairs so we had a really good view. They performed really well. They were really funny!

They were the best show from the whole day I would really like to watch them perform again.

My Act of Kindness

Today I will be writing about what act of kindness i want to achieve. My act of kindness I would like to achieve is care and respect for others. Meaning help them, do things for them and be kind to them.

Another thing I would like to achieve is pushing myself more when I do school work. Like put more descriptive words in my writing or do harder maths problems.

I would like to achieve these or get better at them by the end of the term.

SS Otaki commeration recount

March 11th I attended the SS Otaki commemoration day. What it is, is a commemoration to remember those that fought their lives for us. This is what happened yesterday.

Whaea Maharata, Whaea destine and another teacher started a karanga welcoming all the visitors into our school. There  were people from all over Aotearoa coming to Otaki college just for the commemoration. We are the only school in New Zealand to do the commemoration.

Next one of the important people did a reading of the time it happened. And about people who were in the navy fighting for our country.

Then we had the wreaths laying ceremony which is where people who came to represent there work team layed wreaths on behalf of all the others who couldn't come. There were a lot of wreaths. They were layed one the monument and on some stands to hold them up.

Finally we ended it with a prayer/ karakia to remember those that went into the navy and fought for New Zealand. We also had a minute of silence to remember them.

1 thing I enjoyed was singing both the songs and 1 thing I learned is the the SS Otaki ship sunk during world war 1.

Learning how to write sentences

Today a lady from write that essay named Mrs Larnder came in and taught us how to write sentences. She gave us ten single words and we had to make sentences out of them. We used prepositions, adverbs. I learnt what a subject is.

My group made four sentences out of the ten single words and then six sentences with the ten words that were combined. I thought it was quite fun and I would do it again.
